Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5-string Acoustic Electric Bass Guitar Reviews

  1. A fretless acoustic Michael Kelly Dragonfly 5 string popped near me for sale. I've never heard of or take any experience with these basses. A search didn't exercise much for me. Can anyone provide some insight/feedback?
  2. A dragonfly iv string was my first ABG, and my showtime fretless too now that I think about information technology. I really liked information technology, wish I hadn't sold it. Well, now I have a Godin, then it'due south all expert. But the Dragondfly was a good bass. Did you have any specific questions virtually it?
  3. I've never owned an acoustic bass before. I would obviously take to go play it in person to see if it fits me. Was more wondering almost how Michael Kelly every bit a brand is regarded, also as how loud they tend to exist unplugged, how the sound resonates and all that.
  4. Equally a brand I recollect it's comparable to anything else at the price betoken. Not premium stuff, not junk. The book unplugged is that same as other ABG's I've played. Fine for practicing in front of the TV without an amp. As most threads on TB will tell you, most ABGs can't really keep upward with higher-pitched acoustic instruments in volume without the amp. Body just isn't large plenty. My wife and I would do children'due south programs; if she strummed lightly on guitar with a felt pick and I dug in hard with a heavy pick we could just about get unplugged volume even.
  5. I had a 5 string fretted Dragonfly at ane time. I agree pretty much with what hrodbert696 said.
I will add that I got a great plugged in sound.
I sold it considering it ended up sitting around not existence played. Just didn't use it similar I thought I would.

I had one. Pretty, and a dandy value for the toll.
The ergonomics of an ABG didn't work well for me. Couple that to having to amplify it if I wanted to play with others, and I decided that if I had to bring an amp, I'd rather bring an electric bass.m
  7. Yeah, the reasons to get an ABG are looks (to fit in at an "unplugged" gig), home (unamped) practice, and tone - they do have a woody sound that resembles an upright though not exactly the same equally a real upright.
  8. The Dragonflies though are also laminate maple tops, and then their acoustic properties endure appropriately - quite dead compared to spruce or cedar - merely the method to the madness is feedback resistance, tuning stability, and a overnice fifty-fifty amp'd tone. A stage instrument IMO, not a good studio ABG you lot want to mic upwardly.
  9. I may selling both a 5 cord fretless and 5 string fretted, I just take too may instruments around the firm. Nice guitars peculiarly for the coin.
  10. I have a iv string fretted Dragonfly. Very nice tone plugged in, very absurd actually. I use information technology almost exclusively at church nonetheless it's great for quiet do at home unplugged. Note: equally much every bit I wanted it to hang with my 2 acoustic buddies, it but doesn't. Cool look (IMO), prissy sound plugged in, will likely not be heard unplugged in a grouping.
  11. First-class betoken. String spacing and neck size are dissimilar on my Dragonfly. It'south not my main bass so I'g virtually e'er missing frets/strings. Approximate I could practice more...but yet. ;)
  12. Plus body size is an consequence sometimes (non simply the neck), but not terribly so.
  13. Hi. I only happened to do a search for Michael Kelly because I own one and wanted to see what the value etc is considering I'one thousand considering selling and this came up. I've had my 4 string fretless for about 5 years (not original owner). This bass plays and sounds really good later on I put new flats on it when I got it. Information technology has a dot inlay on the fretboard itself under the E cord which helps (me at least) maintain better intonation. Visually I think information technology looks astonishing with all the inlay work. Information technology sounds very good acoustically in my opinion to exercise without an amp however plugging information technology in and using the onboard Fishman preamp sounds actually really good. This is where this shines and has a very rich and frankly expensive sound in my opinion.
I have never had it out on a gig and used it to tape several times where it sounds great and mostly only to doodle acoustically around the house.
I'm considering selling as I actually haven't used much in contempo years and am because posting up and peradventure trade for a frettted semi hollow or jazz bass. Anyway I hope this was helpful or at least informative. If you lot are interested or know anyone who might be delight pass it on. I can as well take pics which I'll exercise once I postal service it up equally a listed item.
    Thanks
    Rob
